1. Gestaltungshöhe
The chosen Master thesis is a mostly written exemplar which contains only few graphics and illustrations. When I read the title „Conception of a barrier-free mobile social network app for people with intellectual disabilities“ I expected to have more graphical due to the fact that the author Mila Pham studied Information Design & Media Management at Hochschule Merseburg. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a exemplar which corresponds to my ideas of a design work, but still this thesis matched the most to my future master thesis. 

2. Innovationsgrad
I have been never aware of intellectual disabilities and the way to interact. So I think the topic itself is not that innovative, but the way the author is pointing the interaction between disabled people and their behavior in the online world made me curious to choose this thesis. Also because it fits to the master thesis I’ve chosen before from the FH Joanneum. Due to their special needs it can be a challenge for them to connect with other people and find new friends. This state can result in feeling completely isolated and excluded from society.
 
3. Selbstständigkeit
The author makes the impression of working independently, but in case of creating Personas I would expect to speak to real people instead of creating assumed data.

4. Gliederung und Struktur
In our lessons we’ve learned that the content structure should not contain more than four points. But this master thesis has more than seven points which makes it harder for structuring and understanding the content while reading the text. In the point of Usability the author described every steps very well. Nevertheless it could be more graphical to show the real product and make it more interesting.

5. Kommunikationsgrad
A big part of the communication is how the author included tests like usability tests and also questionnaires and interviews to rely on real data for her thesis. 

6. Umfang der Arbeit
In the whole, the master thesis contains 121 pages of which four pages is the content and 9 pages are references. 

7. Orthographie, Sorgfalt und Genauigkeit
In case of Orthographie I didn’t recognize any mistakes. The language is in a very simple English written which makes it not that professional and what is also a negative point is that German and English language partly is mixed. 

8. Literatur
The work consists mainly of book sources, but there are also many internet sources used. But it’s definitely not good structured, because the author didn’t categorize the sources.

Gestaltungshöhe

Die Gestaltung der Arbeit hält sich – soweit ich das beurteilen kann – streng an die Vorgaben der Universität. Es ist kein individueller Stil erkennbar und die Gestaltungsqualität ist dadurch eher gering. 

Innovationsgrad

Den Innovationsgrad der Arbeit würde ich auch als gering einschätzen. Es wurde das Thema der kulturellen Unterschiede bereits in einigen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten behandelt. Die Arbeit zeigt zwar einen hohen Anteil an eigenständiger Analyse, weshalb die gezogenen Schlüsse dementsprechend neu sind, allerdings wurde keine neue These aufgestellt und auch keine neuen Kenntnisse durch verschiedene Forschungsmethoden erhoben. 

Selbstständigkeit

Die Stufe der Selbstständigkeit würde ich als mittel einschätzen, da ein großer Teil der Arbeit der aus dem theoretischen Teil, und dieser wiederum lediglich aus Literaturrecherche besteht. Es wurden für die Arbeit keine Forschungsmethoden angewendet um neue Kenntnisse zu erlangen, der Verfasser hat lediglich eine eigene Analyse verfasst.

Gliederung und  Struktur

Die Arbeit ist in einen theoretischen und einen praktischen Teil gegliedert. Im ersteren, dem theoretischen Teil, werden zuerst Übersetzungstheoretische Grundlagen erläutert, diese anschließend mit dem Bereich der Werbung zusammengeführt und schließlich das Zusammenspiel der Übersetzung, Werbung und chinesischer Kultur behandelt. 

Im praktischen Teil werden anhand der theoretischen Kenntnisse schließlich verschiedene Werbesujets analysiert und schlussendlich eine Conclusio verfasst. 

Kommunikationsgrad

Das Thema wird den Leserinnen und Lesern sehr gut erklärt und im praktischen Teil auch durch Bilder veranschaulicht bzw. die aufgestellten Behauptungen untermauert. Es wird ebenfalls grundlegendes Wissen vermittelt, sodass man der Arbeit leicht folgen kann. 

Umfang der Arbeit

Die Arbeit umfasst ohne das Literaturverzeichnis 137 Seiten, allerdings mit sehr hohem Zeilenabstand. Da jedoch viele verschiedene Literaturquellen zum Einsatz kamen, finde ich das Außmaß der Arbeit angemessen. 

Orthographie sowie Sorgfalt und Genauigkeit

Der Verfasser hat sehr genau und sorgfältig gearbeitet. Während meiner Analyse sind mir keine Fehler aufgefallen es wurde auch korrekt zitiert. 

Literatur

Die literarischen Quellen teilen sich in Primär- und Sekundärliteratur auf, welche jeweils relativ viele verschiedene Quellen enthält. 

Die Primärliteratur besteht hierbei vorwiegend aus Internetquellen, es handelt sich zum Großteil um Werbesujets die im Zuge der Masterarbeit analysiert und verglichen wurden.

Die Sekundärliteratur hingegen besteht hauptsächlich aus Buchquellen. Einige Quellen hierbei sind jedoch schon relativ alt und ihr Inhalt könnte bereits veraltet sein. Die Quellen wurden für den theoretischen Teil der Arbeit herangezogen.

Evaluation of an External Master’s Thesis

Title of the Work: “Pictogram System to Resolve Language Barriers in Medical Communication,  Investigation, Diagnosis and Treatment”

I’ve chosen to analyze this work because it deals with a topic that I find relevant for my research. It enters the field of Participatory Design and covers some aspects of Communication Barriers, I am also interested in. The author describes his work as an attempt to develop a system that improves communication through visual language in a medical context to be used in the Indian subcontinent. He mentions cases where a medical practitioner has to communicate with a low-literacy level, migrant patient, or those who do not speak a common language, where this project has to come up with the visual aids to be given to the patient, in order to explain his/her condition resulting in a collaborative effort with a practitioner.

Level of Design

The work has a simple layout, with a clear structure that leads the eye easily through important sections. Titles, as well as subtitles, are bolded, noticeable, and the running text is legible, with carefully considered spacing and row length, I would say. The simplicity of the layout ensures a comfortable reading flow. Different parts of chapters are divided with numbers and dots, which gives the reader precise insights into the main parts of the work. Between every chapter, there is a blank page with its title, which also separates the different sections. Graphics are placed mostly at the bottom of the text, or on a separate page, yet some of them are pixelated, which leads to the impression of insufficient material preparation.

The work does get a little bit messy at the end – in the Appendices part, since it contains numerous examples of scanned sheets used during the participatory design sessions.

Outline and Structure

The work is structured in a very nice way, giving a clear overview of the most important parts. The sequence of the chapters is logical, so the reader can easily follow.

Degree of Innovation

It is hard to estimate the degree of Innovation within this work. The author mentions one similar project which was testing the theory of icons being used as a replacement for written words in the medical field, from which his project obtained ist stylistic quality and design elements from. On the other hand, the way in which testing and development of the existing system were performed, as well as the representation of results, can be considered as very innovative. The author himself says that the present scope of the project was not to find a final design solution, than to lay the groundwork for future design improvements, evolution, and application, which, in my opinion, he has managed to do.

Independence

The independent implementation of the work is also hard to evaluate. Considering there are not many works and projects, except the one already mentioned, which handles this problem, I think it is already a certain dose of independence in the work. The author gives his opinion in most cases, but also uses quotes, and mentions various theories and researches.

Degree of Communication

I would classify the degree of communication through the work as average. The language that the author uses is easy to understand, he uses terms and design terms, in the appropriate measure. The situation and the design problems are described in a comprehensible way.

Scope of Work

The work has a total of 224 pages, which I found extensive, and hard to follow after a while, but considering the design problem and the whole participatory design process which was being conducted, I understand that it took a lot of explanation, especially in chapter 5, where we see the icon and system development.

Orthography

I would not rate this criterion as being on a high level, since as soon as I started to read, I noticed some missing letters, on the second page already.  As I went further, I noticed other spelling mistakes.

Literature

There are 22 sources mentioned in the literature list, while 6 of them are online sources.

Gestaltungshöhe

Die Gestaltungshöhe der Arbeit würde ich als relativ hoch bezeichnen. Es wird während der gesamten Arbeit eine gute Balance zwischen den Gestaltungsvorgaben der Universität und dem Umsetzen eines individuellen Designs gehalten. So werden zum Beispiel dem schlichten Inhaltstext schöne und gut designte Kapitelzahlen zur Seite gestellt, ohne die wissenschaftliche Lesbarkeit des Textes zu beeinflussen.

Gestaltungselemente wie Abbildungen, Tabellen oder Codezeilen haben zwar kein homogenes Design, erfüllen aber jedes für sich sehr effektiv die ihm zugeordnete Aufgabe.

Gestaltungshöhe
Da die Verfasserin aus keinem designbezogenem Kontext kommt ist die Arbeit sehr dezent angelegt. Die Gestaltung der Arbeit war, so schein es zumindest, eher nebensächlich wenn nicht sogar gleichgültig.

Innovationsgrad
Den Innovationsgrad der Arbeit würde ich nicht allzu hoch einschätzen, da das Thema in den letzten Jahren, ich denke auch schon 2014, nicht nur in Fachkreisen sondern auch medial sehr oft und ausgiebig behandelt und diskutiert wurde. 

Selbstständigkeit
Die Verfasserin hat, meines Erachtens nach, sehr eigenständig und wissenschaftlich gearbeitet.

Gliederung und Struktur
Die Arbeit ist in zwei große Teile gegliedert. Der erste Teil befasst sich ausschließlich mit theoretischen Überlegungen, wo die Verfasserin in 5 Kapiteln ihr Thema Gesellschaftliche Bilder und Geschlechterkonstruktionen in zeitgenössischen Kinderbüchern behandelt. Der zweite Teil dokumentiert die Vorgehensweise und die Ergebnisse der empirische Studie der Verfasserin zum Thema moderne Kinder- und Bilderbücher in Österreich. Anschließend folgen eine Zusammenfassung und die Quellenangabe. Grundsätzlich ist die Arbeit sehr logisch und schlüssig gegliedert.  

Kommunikationsgrad
Obwohl die Arbeit nicht „durch-designed“ wurde, wird vor allem der zweite Teil welcher der empirischen Studie der Verfasserin gewidmet wurde, sehr klar und verständlich kommuniziert. Die verwendeten Grafiken, vor allem zur Erklärung der Forschungsergebnisse, erfüllen voll und ganz ihre Aufgabe. 

Umfang der Arbeit
Meiner Auffassung nach ist die Arbeit recht umfangreich und auch die hohe menge an Fachliteratur lässt auf eine umfassende Recherche schließen. 

Orthographie sowie Sorgfalt und Genauigkeit
Vielleicht wurde etwas zu selten in den Fußnoten zitiert. Ansonsten wären mir persönlich keine sonstigen Fehler aufgefallen. 

Literatur
Die Verfasserin verwendet eine große Auswahl an Fachliteratur und einige wenige Online-Quellen. Alles in allem wirken die Quellen fundiert und sorgfältig ausgewählt. Man merkt, dass sich die Verfasserin umfangreich mit ihrem Thema und der dazugehörigen Fachliteratur auseinandergesetzt hat.

Notifications via vibrotactile signals.

Level of design

The structure of this Thesis, is build upon two pillars. First, the author presents the theoretical part and the research conducted on the topic. The second pillar consists of the practical application of this acquired knowledge into programming and building a wearable device. The two pillars of theoretical analysis and practical work, are presented in order, but in a later alternating fashion, since a research-test-evaluate-research approach was used in the project development.

Degree of innovation

The degree of innovation is satisfactory. The author is not inventing any new technology nor is he introducing a brand new approach to vibrotactile communication. Instead, he is taking a user centered approach to the generic vibration communication of devices that exist today, and builds upon that. He gets inspired from the dissatisfaction of notification systems on smart devices and utilizes vibration in a more well-designed and human-centered fashion. Generally, the user has to adjust to the vibration signals on devices, while the author successfully reverses this pathway and adjusts the vibration signals to fit the user needs.

Independence

The level of independence of this work is significant. Even though the research on vibration as a communication medium was done with the intention to replace auditory notifications for smartphones, the research findings and analysis on human interaction to vibration can be fruitful for many other areas where communication via vibrotactile (vibrotactile=vibration through touch) interfaces is appropriate.

Outline and structure

The presentation design of this research is identical to the author’s real journey towards completing this project. The order of research, work and evaluation presented in this thesis, corresponds with the same real order the author followed.

Degree of communication

Right off, after a short introduction about the topic of notifications and vibration as a communication medium, the author presents the questions that will be answered in the pages that will follow. I find this to be a good way of presenting research. The reader, by being presented with those research questions early on, gets a chance to relate to them and build up the desire to find out the answer to those questions.

Scope of work

The presentation of the technical work, which includes the coding part and the hardware assembling, were clear and intuitive. The code and the application structure were analyzed and explained. Additionally the full extension of the code was provided in the literature as a website link, so that the reader, if familiar with the scripting language used, could analyze further, without the author’s simplification and explanation.

Spelling

I did not notice significant spelling mistakes. The only thing regarding this area that became apparent to me, was the fact that the tone of language would change from time to time. From analytical formal speech, to colloquial tone.

Accuracy and precision

Regarding the qualitative part of the research, the author chose to not only present his findings and the conclusions drawn out of them, but also the actual questionnaire that he designed and used when conducting the research.

Literature

The portion of analog and digital resources of literature were somewhat balanced, even though online resources were favored. Regarding the nature of the project and the coding/hardware research required, I find it inevitable that weblinks would dominate the literature.

I was very happy to find and read this thesis because it provided me with more than just the mere input for a thesis construction analysis, but also gave me valuable data for my upcoming Thesis research topic. Coincidentally, I am also interested in developing a wearable device that will communicate with the user through vibrotactile signals. This thesis serves as a great foundation for me.
