EYA 2019 Path Out: serious game and autobiography
On the EYA 2019 where many interesting concepts of start-ups but one of them excited me the most. It was the game “Path Out”.
In this game you play as Abdullah Al- Karam (who is the graphic designer and a syrian refugee) the odyseey of him getting to Europe as a refugee. In different Levels you can autobiographic play his decisions and guide him to his destination. It was for me somehow a proof that today games are more than just a thing for little kids. To tell story’s or to give a feeling for such a situation this kind of game could be some kind of educational and historical document that brings a conflict to live and lets you as a gamer get into the game. My ideas about this kind of game is that there could be a possibility to use to give a better understanding of conflicts happening all the time every minute in the world. This could not just give a better understanding for young people which might not be interested in situations happening not in front of their homes. When we compare this game with assassins creed which somehow gives historical information about different times in a game the success even for schools could be huge. Learning while gaming, understanding by refeeling the situation. I mean if school would be a game everything would be more interesting.
for the next year I might not apply to EYA 2020 because I can not imagine about an idea that might be as interesting as path out or eye build. I mean for now everything is still new and university has so many different approaches that can guid me to thoughts that I can not know now. Even with the other students I can image the we can get some good ideas by discussing or at a beer.
European Youth Award 2019
Above all, I am glad to have become familiar with some of the very promising and innovative ideas and projects of great social value that have already been in use or soon will be.
The whole concept of event assembles young people which are trying to make the world a better place, through developing possible solutions for some of the burning global problems; but the project I was most interested in was the Eyelight project – that handles with 3d real-time surface for partially sighted and blinds.
Based on the substitution of sight by hearing and touch, the app helps people to interact independently in their surroundings. This idea handles with helping people with sight disabilities, in a way that yet has not been developed, which I find really extraordinary. Eyelight is a product similar to a plate, based on inputs from a wearable 3D camera that captures the situation in front of the user. I strongly believe and hope that this idea can help to make the world a more human and friendly place for those who deal with this kind of problems on a daily basis.
Also, I think there is a lot of space in this project for developing different ways of approach to reach an aim.
Investing in this idea would definitely mean progress in humanity because we have to think not only about difficulties within the society, then also we have to consider other facts of existing solutions for our target group. In this particular case, people with vision disabilities were offered only common solutions like guide canes and dogs, which cost too much and can lead to or be disabled due to the other problems like fear of animals, allergies, etc.
Eyelight would also affect the indoor activities of our target group, which could be faster done, which means a person using the product could become more independent. Achieving an acceptable price for the majority of the potential users should also be considered.
I still can not tell for sure if I would apply to the program next year, but if I in meantime find a way to contribute to this exceptional event, I would be more than happy to do it.
Usability Standards – DIN EN ISO 9241

EYA 2019
The European Youth Award (EYA) is a great opportunity to meet young and talented people with a vision for the future. Through digital technologies they tackle societal challenges people face every day.
LiGENCE (www.ligence.io)
The first to present their idea was LiGENCE. It was impressive to see how heart Ultrasound imaging can be used more efficiently through this programme, because quicker results mean less effort for doctors and that potentially leaves time for more patients. The topic of heart diseases is especially important because 1,5 Million people die from this type of illness every year.
Eye Build It (www.eye-build-it.com)
Eye Built it is really cool, because it gives even completely paralyzed people a way to express themselves and be creative. It is a block building game which works through eye tracking and there are online communities to join where it is all about digital inclusion. This idea has a lot of potential and is ideal for physically impaired people.
Path Out (www.path-out.net)
Path-Out is a video game on Steam which features young Abduhla who finds his way to Europe from Syria which has become a warzone. What is interesting about this videogame is that it is based on a real story. The style of the game reflects the feelings they wanted to convey.
imagiLabs (www.imagilabs.se)
The imagiLabs Accessory is a great way for girls to learn about programming. However when you look at toys like Lego Mindstorms they can also easily amaze girls and give them the opportunity to programme a device. The starter kit is expensive and for premium use you need to pay monthly.
Forest and Climate (www.sumeiklima.org)
Forest and Climate uses satellite data against deforestation and for collecting data that they use to determine where different tree species are ideally planted. They encourage people to plant trees in the designated areas and want to track where and when these trees are planted. This is a good idea to prevent climate change and it would be great for this idea to work well.
mCommunity (www.m-zaednica.mk)
mCommunity is an App where you as a citizen can take action by reporting a problem. This active communication with citizens should then lead to important changes that citizens can suggest themselves. It is an idea worth testing, but I am not sure if this will work for every community. I can’t imagine a Million people who all talk about their own problems in the community.
Socialbnb (www.socialbnb.net)
Socialbnb started in Cambodia where they met a man who wanted to open a school for the village, but couldn’t afford it. When you book through Socialbnb night costs 44€ in average, which is very cheap when you compare it to Airbnb or booking.com. With the money they helped the man to build a school in Cambodia, which I believe is a fantastic idea.
Aivy (www.aivy.app)
Aivy is an intelligent career counsellor app for android and iOS, which aims to discover hidden potential through psychometric tests and helps to find a fitting job for the user. The is simple to use and collects data to show ideal jobs for you, which is great, but because there is such a variety of jobs available nowadays it can also be inaccurate.
FreeHour (www.freehour.eu)
Free Hour is an App where you can import your calendar and have friends who can see your free hours to meet up with them. You can also mark unavailable free hours, which I find amazing. The app is practical, easy to use and has the potential to bring people together. The idea seems to me well thought through. 80% of students in Malta are already using this app on a daily basis.
Eyelight (www.eyelight.tech)
Eyelight is a 3D real-time surface for visually impaired people to find their way through a building. This enables them to feel where they are positioned and how far object are away from them. They tested a static version of this and it worked, but the 3D real-time surface is still in the making.
TouchDesigner Workshop
- COMP – Components represent 3D objects, panel components, and other various operators. These components can house entire networks of other operators.
- TOP – Texture Operators handle all 2D image operations.
- CHOP – Channel Operators are used for motion, audio, animation, and control signals.
- SOP – Surface Operators are the native 3D objects of TouchDesigner responsible for 3D points, polygons, and other 3D “primitives”
- MAT – Materials are used for applying materials and shaders to the 3D rendering pipeline.
- DAT – Data Operators are for ASCII text as plain text, scripts, XML, and tables. (https://docs.derivative.ca/Operator)
Folgendes Video gibt Einblick in die Programmierumgebung von „TouchDesigner“.
Formal but playful
